The Catalogue of the 2024 Tallinn Architecture Biennale is now available!

The catalogue of the Tallinn Architecture Biennale 2024 (TAB 2024), “RESOURCES FOR A FUTURE”, is now available! This comprehensive publication brings together the key ideas, projects, and dialogues from the past biennale. Edited by TAB 2024 head curator Anhelina L. Starkova, the catalogue reflects the curatorial exploration of a central question: What kinds of resources do we need for the architecture of the future?

At the heart of the recent biennale was the diverse and inventive use of resources in architecture – from materials and building typologies to spatial planning and society itself. In an era marked by global crises, digitalisation, social fragmentation, and material scarcity, the need for stable yet flexible spatial solutions is greater than ever. TAB 2024, with an international outlook rooted in local context, highlighted how architecture can respond to these challenges.

The “Resources for a Future” catalogue presents the three core components of the programme

  • Curatorial Exhibition, which explored the multi-layered nature of architecture as a resource;
  • Symposium, which brought together international thinkers, practitioners, and researchers;
  • Installation Competition Programme, which resulted in a waiting pavilion fragment constructed from secondary raw materials at the Baltic Station.

In addition, the publication also covers the vibrant satellite programme, which included workshops, conferences, seminars, and public city tours that engaged both professionals and the broader public.

Estonia’s Minister of Infrastructure, Vladimir Svet, emphasised the biennale’s societal impact:

“The Tallinn Architecture Biennale has always brought together architects, researchers, developers, and other stakeholders. But more importantly – it is a public event that takes place not only at the Estonian Museum of Architecture but also across the city of Tallinn, encouraging citizens and visitors to actively participate. The seventh TAB highlighted three values that I deeply appreciate: inclusivity, solidarity, and a zero-waste mindset. We must make architecture both physically and conceptually accessible to everyone. TAB 2024 helped bring architecture closer even to those without a professional background. Alongside military support for Ukraine, we must also think about what comes after: rebuilding cities and villages in ways that make them more resilient to future threats. And, of course, this must be done with environmental awareness – reusing what exists, avoiding waste, and designing for circularity.”

The catalogue not only documents the TAB 2024 programme but also invites the reader to reflect and engage – how can we create architecture that is inclusive, just, and future-proof?
